In reality, greening trains isn’t always a simple practice. Networks are producing less CO2, but the issue remains of how to take smaller lines out of the diesel-fuelled 20th century. Hydrogen offers a solution for non-electrified routes, but the technology has faced serious hurdles in the real world, with some networks even abandoning their planned H2 fleets due to costs. Amid the unveiling of Stadler’s H2-ready RS ZERO at InnoTrans ‘24, one of the company’s CTOs tells RailTech what can be done.
