Spain: ‘new phase’ of liberalisation kicks off with 3 more competitive corridors
Spain has launched what it calls “the second phase” of its liberalisation programme for passenger rail, with Adif opening up to private operators on three new corridors: the Madrid-Galicia line, the Madrid-Asturias/Cantabria line, and the Madrid-Cádiz/Huelva line. In total, it’s offering up to 72 new daily services for the state-backed Renfe and Spain’s new open operators to compete for. That likely means cheaper tickets in the near future, but is competition genuinely necessary to boosting passenger services, as the EU claims?
