Budget statements are a part of parliamentary democracy, and the UK is no different. Last week, the new UK Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, swiftly tailored her government spending plans for the coming fiscal year. It did not make very pleasing news for passenger rail operators, nor the customers on board the trains. All round fare increases went along with the usual round of tax increases, leaving commuters beleaguered.
