One of Europe’s busiest rail routes, the Paris-Lyon high-speed line, is closing this weekend for four days as SNCF pushes ahead with its major upgrade to the new European standard ERTMS signalling system. Constituting a third of all of France’s high-speed rail traffic, the route’s closure will mean major rail disruptions. And while it signals a “crucial milestone” in the 820-million-euro project, the trains won’t actually be switching to the EU system for another six years.
