BAM to prepare Utrecht tracks for Urbos trams
Dutch contractor BAM Infra will replace the tracks of the Utrecht sneltram network being used for more than 30 years. The works will be carried out in summer 2020 on the route between Utrecht Centraal station and Nieuwegein/IJsselstein. The tracks will be renovated in order to enter into service the brand new Urbos 100 trams in December 2020.
The modernisation of the Utrecht sneltram includes upgrading the tram stops and the track replacement. The renovation of tram stops is scheduled to start in April 2020. They will be adapted for the low-floor vehicles. The second phase of works will begin on 1 June 2020 and will go on by 21 August 2020. During summertime, the tram service will be temporarily replaced with bus connections.
Urbos trams
According to the signed deals, Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF is obliged to supply 49 low-floor bidirectional trams of the Urbos family for the Utrecht lines. 27 vehicles will have five sections, a length of around 33 metres, a width of 2.65 metres and a total capacity for 216 passengers. 22 trams will be the seven-section units with a length of more than 41 metres, a width of 2.65 metres and a total capacity for 277 passengers. The first five-section Urbos tram was delivered in Utrecht in December 2016 for testings. The new trams will start to serve the regular routes since December 2020.
